Ensign Cohen was also there early, both were working on "Alpha 34" and getting it ready to present to the senior engineering crew. "Hey Pete, does this look right to you?" said Matrix pointing to the labyrinth of data and calculations on the input display panel. "I thought we had more data points on the simulation." Peter looked at the screen and tapped in PADD for verification. "Yes, those look correct Steve. My PADD calculations match what is on the display." affirmed Peter. Matrix sat back in his chair. "Okay I think we're ready to see what the other's think of all this. They should be here any moment." "Nervous chief?" asked Peter. "Yes. I know we've looked this over a hundred times, but I always worry we're too close and might have missed something." replied Matrix. Peter laughed, "Its possible, but not likely." Peter looked up as the main engineering doors opened. "Here they come." Matrix stood up, adjusted his uniform, tapped the displays blank and greeted the rest of his crew. "Good morning Ensign Rathyn, Ensign Tristen" said Matrix. Peter looked on and laughed inside. ~Matrix should have baked cookies, he looks like a school boy hoping to impress the other kids.~ (Reply Rathyn, Tristen) Matrix turned and glanced at Peter. He knew what Peter was thinking and gave him a coy smile. "Well everyone I've come up with an idea together with Mr. Cohen on a way to boost weapon and energy efficiency on the Paladin. Peter and I have run a number of simulations and the results are promising. However, I wanted to include you in on the next phase because of your individual expertise, the fact that you're part of this engineering team and I thought you might enjoy the work." Matrix leaned against the console panel and waited to any comments. (Reply Rathyn, Tristen, IYW) "If all of you would follow me into the conference room I can begin the briefing." said Matrix. Everyone followed Matrix into the conference room just off main engineering. The lights dimmed as all took a seat and faced the main console display. Three large screens light up in sequence. The main screen displayed "Alpha 34". Matrix stood up, next to the display screens. "Computer, secure room." "What you're about to see here should remain confidential. Nothing should be spoken about this project outside of this room or with any other crew members. Is that understood?" asked Matrix. (Reply Rathyn, Tristen) "Good." said Matrix. The main display screen opened with a schematic of the ships energy systems and diagrams of the weapon systems. "Alpha 34 is an attempt to give the Paladin a bit more bite to her weapon systems and increase energy efficiency. This is accomplished by augmenting her energy conduits with a new multi-phased matrix feed, some special program modifications and new reaction coil conduits feed through the tertiary warp core." Matrix paused briefly and looked at the crew. He continued as the displays mimicked the sections he was addressing. "I've used the holodeck with live data feeds from ships systems to run simulations on the design with good results. On average we've gained nearly a 50% increase in energy weapon output and almost a 70% increase in energy efficiency. As a side benefit we're estimating shield regeneration to approach a 45% increase. All this with about a 61% increase in heat generation in the primary conduits which we can vent into space as needed or re-route to other systems. The tertiary warp core, in the simulations, averaged a peak output of 102%." said Matrix. Matrix continued,"There is a problem with all of this. The computer simulation is conducted in a perfectly functioning starship. No losses in systems, computer lag, etc. The other issue we've run up against is how do we keep the tertiary warp core output below its critical max? As you know anything over 105% and boom!" He pointed to Peter. Peter swung around in his chair to face the other two engineers. "To date we've run 94 simulations and all of the generated data shows we're on to something here. The warp core overload notwithstanding. Its never been done on a starship. It if works in real testing we may give the Paladin a huge advantage. The fleet for that matter." Matrix spoke up, "What I would like is for you to review the material, the simulations and give me your input. Check out the data, the simulations see if we've overlooked anything. Make more changes, input what you think would work, work the system. In short find a problem and find a solution. I don't expect the simulation results to be as good in real testing, but we should be able to make a substantial increase in energy production and weapon output." said Matrix. Matrix sat down in the head chair, "I want to propose to the first officer and Captain we conduct a live test of the system, its modifications and see if this actually works. If its repeatable, if there are any drawbacks, any issues. This is where you're individual expertise in your fields will come in." "I know this is a lot to swallow, but any questions so far, any concerns?" asked Matrix. He crossed over to the captain's Ready Room, and range the doorchime. When the doors slid open, he walked in, and waited for the doors to close before speaking. "Captain," he said, "I want to sincerely apologize for the way I acted during the battle. It was rash, and I didn't think of the ship first, like any bridge officer should. I just want to hit home how much regret I feel for what I did." (posted by Spencer) ======================================================================================================================== (USS Paladin - Conference Room - ACEO Ensign Alura Rathyn - 900) Matrix stood up, adjusted his uniform, tapped the displays blank and greeted. "Good morning Ensign Rathyn, Ensign Tristen" said Matrix. 'Lura returned his greeting with a nod. "Good morning, Chief." ~He's very chipper this morning,~ she thought. (Reply: Tristen) "Well everyone I've come up with an idea together with Mr. Cohen on a way to boost weapon and energy efficiency on the Paladin. "I know this is a lot to swallow, but any questions so far, any concerns?" asked Matrix. "It should be possible to modify the tertiary core's injectors to govern the energy output," Rathyn offered her eyes narrowing as they peered at the information on the screen. "We could adjust the magnetic conduits coming out of the mainline, maybe add regulators at the junction set to synchronize the polarization nodes and compensate for any power spikes." (REply: Matrix, any) Rathyn got up and moved to the display screen, looking over the power feed scheme. "We would have to put them here, here and here," she said pointing to each of the junctions where the anti-matter feed conduits branched to the tertiary core. "Since your talking about something completely new and different, we'll have to start from scratch on the regulator couplings and create a whole new design." She shrugged. "Do-able." (REply: Matrix) "The new design would have to be able to function independent of the other three in the event we lose one or two for any reason." He honestly did not want to report for duty. He was expecting a day off, a day to relax. One morning where he could sleep in and not have to worry about any projects. His uniform half neat he stumbled into Engineering. "Good morning Ensign Rathyn, Ensign Tristen" said Matrix. "Good morning, Chief." Lura said. Zack yawned, "Good morning." "Well everyone I've come up with an idea together with Mr. Cohen on a way to boost weapon and energy efficiency on the Paladin. Ensign Tristen didn't respond although he noticed that Steven was waiting for some reply. "If all of you would follow me into the conference room I can begin the briefing." said Matrix. Lt Matrix commanded. "What you're about to see here should remain confidential. Nothing should be spoken about this project outside of this room or with any other crew members. Is that understood?" asked Matrix. Zack had now woken up some more, and the extra security the Lt was putting around the place made Zack more curious and alert about the situation. "Yes sir," Zack said more confidently as he was paying more attention now. Lt Matrix and Peter began to explain what exactly the meeting was about in great detail. As they spoke more and more of the situation Zack became more interested. Forgetting about his day off, momentarily. He picked up a PADD in-front of him and noticed it was locked by password. Zack's guess was it was the information he was being given. "It should be possible to modify the tertiary core's injectors to govern the energy output. We could adjust the magnetic conduits coming out of the mainline, maybe add regulators at the junction set to synchronize the polarization nodes and compensate for any power spikes." (Reply: Matrix, any) Rathyn got up and moved to the display screen, looking over the power feed scheme. Every thing I have heard and see seem promising. But I would rather look into all your reports before I make any comments into this. (posted by Calvin) ======================================================================================================================== (USS Paladin - Conference Room (Engineering) - CEO LT Steven Matrix - 0902) Matrix marveled at Alura as she discussed her ideas. He was conscious of her beauty and was trying not to be obvious during the meeting. He kept a professional tone and distance during the discussion. As Alura spoke Matrix listened with the other engineers. "It should be possible to modify the tertiary core's injectors to govern the energy output. We could adjust the magnetic conduits coming out of the mainline, maybe add regulators at the junction set to synchronize the polarization nodes and compensate for any power spikes." Matrix smiled, "Nice idea Ensign, please continue." replied Matrix Rathyn got up and moved to the display screen, looking over the power feed scheme. "We would have to put them here, here and here," she said pointing to each of the junctions where the anti-matter feed conduits branched to the tertiary core. "Since your talking about something completely new and different, we'll have to start from scratch on the regulator couplings and create a whole new design." She shrugged. "Do-able." Matrix looked over Alura's junction notations as she continued. "The new design would have to be able to function independent of the other three in the event we lose one or two for any reason." Matrix looked at Zack, "Any comments Zack?" "I don't know sir. Every thing I have heard and see seem promising. But I would rather look into all your reports before I make any comments into this. Matrix sat down in his chair. "Fair enough. Zack, you can find all the information in the computer file. You're authorized to review, edit and report on these findings. I'll give you three days to review the materials. Does that sound agreeable?" (Reply Thristen) Matrix continued, "Alura, same goes for you. Three days to review the materials. I'll call a follow up meeting after that. In the mean time no one discusses this outside engineering or with any other crew members. If a superior happens by and makes an inquiry, tell them the truth. That you're working on an experiment with the CEO. Direct any questions to me. Understood?" Ensign Cohen spoke first. "Yes Chief, I'll continue my work on the interface to the main computer and controls." They were both in critical condition, as Nurse Florence had developed severe complications from her head wound. Their bodies lay motionless on the biobeds every time Nissa made her rounds to check on them. "Dr. Whetari?" The low voice shook Nissa out of her thoughts as she looked up to she one of the nurses, a young Bajorian Male, standing just inside the doorway. "Yes? Nurse Keujet, was it?" Nissa responded. "Yes, ma'am. I'm sorry for coming right in, but you didn't answer for a moment or two and we have a bit of a problem." He explained. Standing up with a frown, Nissa walked towards the door as Keujet led her to an older Bolian female. What seems to be the problem?" "Petty Officer Za'greh came in complaining of joint swelling and general fatigue. Preliminary tests point to a Bolian influenza." Nurse Keujet said as he handed Nissa the PADD with his examination notes. Nissa continued with her own examination, chatting with Za'greh and trying to determine when the infection may have occurred. The nurse's notes did seem to indicate a viral infection, one that Nissa knew to be specific to Bolians. Walking over to one of the medical workstations, Nissa called up the analysis of the virus at hand. It was a slight variation of the common Bolian flu. Distinct enough to require a different treatment, Nissa quickly brought up a list of all Bolian crewmemebers and sent a quick message requesting that they report to Sickbay to be examined, since it was unusual for just one flu-stricken crewperson to be on a ship. Loading a hypospray with a general anti-inflammatory and another with a painkiller, Nissa headed back over to the Petty Officer, giving her both medicines and asking her to remain in Sickbay for observation. ~Well,~ Nissa thought, ~this is something that I can handle, at least.~ (posted by Sarah) ======================================================================================================================== Hope you enjoyed!
